I’m going to start with a little rant. It may offend some people but that’s OK, I’ll write it off as creative friction or something. Thing is, I’ve kinda had enough of all this attempt to re-create the ‘real’ world online. I’m thinking primarily - but not exclusively - of all these sites that have (ahem) whizzy page-flip animations for turning pages on, er, the screen. We’ve already got a real world, with real books and real pages and the web doesn’t need to mirror it. It’s perfectly fine to use real world themes and aesthetics but simply reproducing stuff we’ve been experiencing for hundreds of years seems a step backwards. The opportunities for inventing interfaces are almost endless, and OK they may not always be perfect but I’ll always favour innovation over replication.
